Prop design & fabrication
Mirror Mistress Weapon (TV prop for CW The Flash, via IRL Creative)
Our value proposition in propsAdding the 3rd dimension: Props start from gadgets in the script. They help set the scene and empower the actor(s) to become the villain or the action hero, surprising the viewer with “technology” and craft never seen before.
Our specialty is sci-fi inspired props, from wearable armor, helmets, and weapons, to intricate tech devices, capsules, and set decor.
Heroes, stunts, and background. We design to meet the need. Everything is rendered & rapid prototyped along the way, so that you can be part of the design process, and validate direction.
In-house we offer the front end design work, from concept art to fully defined 3D models ready to fabricate. Early in the design phase, we help you to identify the best material choices to match your scene and budget, while we solve the construction method(s) and line up production.
Our experience working in and collaborating with professional prop shops, costume houses, and local material suppliers, gives us the range we need to equip you with high fidelity camera-ready props.
Product development
Tombstone - miniature firing collectible (Product for Burke Gallery Guns)
Our value proposition in product developmentDetails matter: New products are quite an undertaking. There are multiple acts in this ‘play’. We become co-directors with you, asking the important question early on; understanding that what you really need are not fancier looking widgets, but effective assets - Ones that connect with your target audience, providing them with new tool(s) which help them achieve a higher standard of service through heightened ease of access to their work or target activity.
We specialize in hard goods - mechanical assemblies, multiple materials, and niche hardware components.
Our background in robotics has offered us a unique approach to design. We communicate with ease across disciplines, allowing us to plan & assist in the many applied tasks required to test and execute on builds of complex electro-mechanical assemblies.
We do much of our mechanical design in-house and we collaborate seamlessly with engineering departments, helping to give intelligent form and housing to objects with complex joints, compute, cooling, wiring and sensor stacks.
Range of motion, field of view, durability, serviceability, are just a few of the critical paths we pay close attention to, while carefully wrapping technology up in an elegant manor that allows the engineering genius to shine, because of how accessible your technology will feel to the end user.
Concept art & visualization
“Boxy” - a box delivery robot, from van to doorstep (artwork for Cartwheel Robotics)
Our value proposition in concept artPlayful ideation: Behind every great product or prop, is artful storytelling.
We help shed light on your product vision with compelling visuals that promote important discussions of form, function, and feel - elements that will set the tone for all human interactions with your product or prop.
In early stages of ideation we promote playful exploration, time permitting, to give us the chance to discover and expand on the character of the object - this act of play can lead to discovery and subtle style shifts which will help your audience/user connect more deeply with your brand and story.
Now entered into the era of generative art, simple ideas can be brought to life very quickly.
However, the designer’s role remains unchanged - establish a design language (the feel of the thing). Does it appear on-brand? Where will it be used? Are the materials in line with the application? What associations will the end users draw? Are we enriching the greater story, without distraction and excess?
Featured project
Kamilla’s camera - CW The Flash season 6
(TV Prop): Sci-fi camera lens that scans for objects from another dimension
Requirements: The lens needed to expand for ‘scanning’, but appear like a typical zoom lens when not in use
My contributions:Functional concept - Engineering of spring loaded mechanism- activated by a twisting action on the base of the lens body
Designed all parts to mimic the look of the camera’s actual zoom lens
3D modeling
Printed with SLA resin
Assembled and tested
